Call for Expression of Interest

Orthotist & Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine

  Orthotic Management of Stroke Patients

The ISPO ANMS outreach committee is pleased to announce, as an advisory body to the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) Kiribati , the call for expression of interest from ISPO members to participate in a workshop to be held at the Tungaru Rehabilitation Centre, Tawara , Kiribati .

The Tungaru Rehabilitation Service (TRS) was officially opened September 2004 and provides a range of rehabilitation services to the Republic of Kiribati . The facility includes a physiotherapy gymnasium and prosthetic orthotic laboratory. The service employs a range of staff including two Physiotherapists and two training Prosthetists/Orthotists. Lee Brentnall (Prosthetist Orthotist) an Australian Volunteer International candidate currently in Kiribati is coordinating the workshop.

The workshop dates are Monday 25 th to Thursday 28 th September 2006.

The target audience for the workshop is health care workers involved in stroke management. The workshop will be promoted external to Kiribati with the intention to attract participation from neighbouring pacific islands however the majority of attendees will be I-Kiribati local health care workers.

The workshop format will include presentations from a range of healthcare workers and where possible supported by practical demonstrations.

Responsibilities of the Orthotist & Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine will include:

  • The preparation and delivery of educational papers on stroke management in their respective areas of expertise
  • Participation in groups discussions, particularly the development of treatment pathways and team work
  • Clinical and technical demonstrations involving the supply of orthotics, both prefabricated and custom made.

The TRS staff have prepared a program for the workshop however it is anticipated that the successful volunteers will have significant input into finalising the program and content presented.

ISPO will meet the costs of volunteer's flights, accommodation and living expenses for the workshop.
