about science & education outreach member resources

Dear members of ISPO Australia,

The Executive Committee is seeking expressions of interest from individuals or groups interested in convening the 2012 Annual Scientific Meeting of ISPO Australia.

What is involved?
The convenor and convening committee will work closely with our professional conference organiser (PCO) – Conference Action – to bring the meeting to fruition. While the PCO will undertake much of the 'leg work' to stage the meeting, they require guidance from a convening committee who will meet regularly to shape the conference. An ISPO Australia representative, familiar with conference organisation, will work as a member of the convening committee and provide assistance and advice.

Benefits of being involved
Previous convenors and committee members have found the experience of convening a meeting both challenging and rewarding. Through the experience, convenors typically develop a range of leadership and management skills as well as build strong personal relationships with other health professionals. Some convenors have sought to host a conference as a way to raise awareness of topical issues or bring sought after speakers to their city.

What experience do I need?
A wide range of people have successfully convened an ISPO Australia conference; most have had no previous event management experience. While some convenors have been very experienced practitioners or managers, that bring a range of skills to the table, others have worked just a few years and have grown through the support offered by the professional conference organiser and ISPO.

Preparations to date
Much of the initial preparatory work has been undertaken including appointment of a professional conference organiser, development of a budget and critical path. It is anticipated that the conference would occur in November/December this year with the city, date and venue to be determined by the professional conference organiser and convening committee.

Major theme
The major theme for the meeting will explore the orthotic management of stroke and aims to raise awareness of the evidence for orthotic intervention as a means to minimise the long-term disability experience by most persons living with stroke.

Research Associate Professor Stefania Fatone, Northwestern University Prosthetic Orthotic Centre, will lead our exploration of the major theme. Dr Fatone is an eminent researcher and much sought after speaker renowned for her ability to translate orthotics research into day-to-day clinical practice.

More information
If you wish to convene the meeting or would like to know more about what is involved, please contact Michael Dillon either by phone: 0421 602 332 or email: michael.dillon@latrobe.edu.au

Expressions of interest will be sought until the 19th January 2012.

Michael Dillon
